Off to a great start

Not really – that’s just me being sarcastic to mask my disappointment.

So far, I put toothpaste on the wrong toothbrush and put my shirt on backwards!  LOL  I’m laughing now, but inside it’s not looking so pretty.

Warning: Venting (aka whining) session forthcoming.

I’m the Queen of Optimism so don’t expect this often.  However, every now and then I have to let it out.  I have zero minutes on my cell phone, my gas tank is on E, we’re out of body wash so I showered with shampoo.  I’m tempted to return some shorts to the store that my mom gave me just so I can get cash.  Of course, I’d probably just get store credit because I don’t have a receipt…and I would probably run out of gas before making it to the gas station…and without any minutes left on my cell phone, I would end up walking home in the scorching heat – getting nothing accomplished!  Geez!!!

Have I mentioned how THIS ECONOMY SUCKS!  Sorry, I don’t usually use that word.  But it does! I know I’m not the only one struggling – just look at today’s big story: “Wall Street Meltdown.” No, I don’t follow financial news, nor do I know exactly what that means.  I just know it’s bad all over the place!

We might just be having ourselves a meltdown any day now if something doesn’t come through soon…and now I’m wondering why on earth I’m wanting to blog about this!  Do I really want to remember this 5 or 10 years from now?!

GOD, I KNOW you have something amazing in store for us!  No, we haven’t been as obedient as we should be and I know that there are millions of others out there that deserve it more than we do, but lately we’re really feeling the pressure.  We’re coming to you, seeking your guidance, anticipating, expecting, hopeful that you’re working things out and that this bump in the road is necessary.  I understand that without this, we couldn’t appreciate that future blessing.

Enough of the whining.

  • I’m grateful that I have a toothbrush, toothpaste, and running water to brush my teeth.

There are many more other things for which I’m grateful.  Right now, I think I’m feeling better.  My hubby’s pancakes (leftover from yesterday’s breakfast) are in the microwave.  Today’s first load of laundry is waiting to be hung outside.  The bathroom door doesn’t know it yet, but it’s about to get a message painted on it.

It could be worse – A LOT WORSE.  Let’s see what today’s Daysie page says…

Shiny Penny

If you have kids, you’ve probably had one of those moments with your little one that just made you want to squeeze her cheeks and give her a big hug when she does or says something really beautiful that brings a warm and fuzzy feeling to your heart?!  I had one of those moments earlier today.

My daughter found a shiny new penny on the ground.  This is the conversation that followed:

HER: “Mama, did you know this penny says, ‘In God We Trust’?”

ME: “Yes, all money says that to remind us that we should trust in Him and not in money.”

HER: “Even the dollar says that.”

ME: “That’s right, God is everywhere.  Even money wants us to remember that it comes and goes, but God is forever.”

HER: “Yeah, and when He gets really old, he just gets young again.”

That just made my heart melt!  Kids aren’t complicated, they just know what they know!  What’s OUR problem?!  We over analyze and always need answers – answers we probably wouldn’t comprehend even if we actually used 100% of our brains!

God’s gentle reminder today could not have come at a better time.  As I’m sure many out there are struggling financially, my family is also getting through some challenging times.  We’re taking it day by day.

Thankfully, I had just enough cash from hubby’s paycheck this week to cover:

  1. the overdue telephone bill (service is restored!!!)
  2. last month’s water bill (this way service goes uninterrupted – we need our daily showers!!!)
  3. get a money order for a very old debt that must be paid or we end up in court
  4. charitable donation to a guy on a street corner
  5. leftover cash for a little bit of gas.

So there’s hope.  When we put our trust in God, He makes everything work out.  Regardless of our circumstances, He comes through.

AMEN!  I had a funny feeling He would show up in my Daysies calendar too!  That’s definitely a message we should all remember!  =)

Lazy Day Activity

Thanks to Hurricane Fay, schools are closed today in my part of the world.  It was announced yesterday afternoon and late last night we decided our family would have a lazy day today.  The plan was to stay in our PJ’s all day and do nothing.

So, we slept in until 9am.  In between watching the weather on TV:  dad cooked up a yummy breakfast;  the boys put away clean laundry and played in their room;  my daughter vacuumed her room;  I cleaned up a bit around the house, vacuumed, and then decided to update our family chore chart.  So much for doing nothing!!!

You see, the kids went chore chart free for most of the summer.  Oh, but they were by no means chore free – I asked them to do things on an as needed basis.  With the start of school, I think it’s important to GET ORGANIZED and so now is the time to re-establish the structure to which they were accustomed.  I know…they’re just gonna love me!!!

Initially, I was going to use the Excel chart we had before and be done with it…

But, then I got sidetracked with e-mail and somehow ended up on where I got an idea for a new chore chart.  I figured since I was blessed with extra time today and God was generous to me by giving me the ability to manipulate pictures and work with my computer, I should put those skills to good use and come up with something useful for my family.  If I could afford it, I would buy the chore chart they sell because it looks like it would be fun and easy to use.  However, since funds and space are limited, but time (at least today) and printer ink are plentiful, I’m creating a new chore chart using a similar format.

MINE (so far)…

I spent some time looking for clipart and illustrations to go with the chores.  I used Excel to make boxes that will get cut out into cards, we’ll add velcro to the back so they stick to a board allowing us to change chores around as needed.  I think it will work for us.  I’ll report back once we’ve used it.

Today’s Daysie quote is:

I always say – DON’T COMPETE, COOPERATE!  Learn from others and share what you know so we ALL win!

Summer break is coming to a close

School’s just around the corner again. Where did this summer go?

When school let out in June, I read somewhere that sometimes kids go through some type of “separation anxiety” during the summer break. I can understand how that can happen with the change in atmosphere and normal day-to-day activities. Thankfully, my kids didn’t experience any of that. I wonder if me staying home with them has anything to do with it. Probably.

We haven’t done a whole lot this summer – it was pretty lazy compared to others. However, we did manage to:

go grape stomping for the very first time…

have a yard sale…

discover and appreciate nature…

do crafts and spread some joy at the same time…

cook and bake…

and (of course) sleep a lot!

The kids are, however, excited to return to school. One of them has gone as far as getting the school list, gathered items listed (if we already have it) and given me a list of what’s missing! No procrastination allowed here! Again, I’m grateful for that because procrastination was a challenge. It’s very refreshing to know that God is helping me break that off so it doesn’t affect my kids!

I have been preparing as well. This weekend, for example, I put together a shopping list of school supplies after going through all the sales circulars in the Sunday paper. Walmart, Walgreens, Target and Office Depot have deals priced under $1, with most under 50 cents! Stock up time!!! I’m sure I’ll be doing it for weeks after school begins. Hey, God calls us to be good stewards and so we should be. With the economy the way it is, we’re being forced to be much thriftier than ever before. But, we can do it! Creating a list helps – organization in everything brings peace of mind. And I’m looking forward to a much more peaceful existence all the way around.

Today’s Daysie says:

“It is not so much the power of God but the love of God that conquers in the end”

Thank you God! John 3:16

Still Making Progress

Wow, I haven’t written in over 6 months – YIKES! When I started this blog, the goal was to write daily in order to:

  • share ideas and information
  • connect with others with similar likes, goals, and experiences
  • become a better photographer
  • learn new techniques and experiment with graphics and fonts
  • give a reader or two a glimpse into my life so that (maybe) they could relate and realize they weren’t the only one thinking, feeling, experiencing the STUFF life throws at you – good and bad
  • get things off my chest
  • and to have something to read down the road

But after a while, it just took too much time to sit down and type. Plus, the frustration of “not achieving the goal I had created for myself” simply sucked all the FUN out of it.

Today, someone sent me a comment. It turned out to be spam so I deleted it, but it forced me to log back in and say a little something. I do believe this is God working out His plan because recently I’ve been more motivated to write a book. So, this must be His way of getting me moving in that direction. Nobody’s going to read a book that doesn’t get written, right? LOL

Writing a book has been a goal of mine for a very long time. I love to read, I’m organized, I enjoy proofing things, I’m creative, conscientious, and tend to build on thoughts in hopes of making the ideas better. That sounds like a good recipe for getting started. So, why haven’t I begun? I guess I’ve been intimidated by the whole process. There exists, too, that issue of procrastination. But, let’s NOT focus on the negative. I’ve already come up with a title so I’m making some progress. My book will be titled: “A minute late and a dollar short” (don’t you steal it, now!!!)

I’ve often visualized myself at book signings and speaking engagements and I don’t even enjoy being in front of crowds! I wonder if it’s wishful thinking? Daydreaming? Or a realization of what God’s dream is for me? We won’t know until we give it a try. If He is the driving force behind this desire, then He will equip me and open the right doors. In the meantime, I’ll blog every so often and do my best to maintain balance with Him at the center.

…’til the next time, here’s today’s Daysies quote:

Go ahead! Face one of your challenges and see where it grows you!
